How to use Random Group Generator in class

Create partners or groups quickly for discussion, problem solving, labs, reading, review, and learning stations.

What is this tool?

Random grouping reduces the time spent assigning teams and gives students opportunities to work with different classmates. It is not a replacement for teacher judgment. You can still adjust a result when students need language support, accessibility accommodations, or a safer working relationship.

How to use it

  1. Paste student names and choose group size or number of groups.
  2. Review the result for support needs, group balance, and classroom dynamics before displaying it.
  3. Assign useful roles such as facilitator, recorder, materials manager, checker, and reporter.

Classroom example: three-round evidence exchange

In round one, pairs compare their answers to one problem. Regroup students for round two so each person explains a previous partner’s strategy. In round three, groups of four decide which strategy is clearest and prepare one shared explanation.

Teacher tips

  • Begin with pairs when a routine is new, then increase group size for a more complex task.
  • Pre-assign a reliable partner when a student needs extra communication or emotional support.
  • Avoid saving or projecting full student names when initials, first names, or seat numbers are enough.
