The story will appear in a shaded reading box at the start of the student packet.

Use a number at the start of each question. The builder will recognize the numbered questions automatically.

Please begin every question with a number, such as 1., 2., or 3.. The number will not appear twice in the Word document.

Your downloadable Word packet includes all five pages: Teacher Notes, Instructions for the Substitute, Did you understand?, Write a new version, and a Six-scene storyboard.

How to use Independent Reading Packet Builder in class

Turn a teacher-selected text and questions into a printable packet with comprehension, rewriting, and storyboard tasks.

Best for: Grades 3–12 Prep time: 10–20 minutes

What is this tool?

The tool formats the packet, while the teacher remains responsible for text difficulty, copyright, background knowledge, and question quality. Choose a text students can understand mostly on their own with a manageable stretch.

How to use it

  1. Paste a teacher-reviewed text that you have permission to use.
  2. Order questions from finding information to inference and personal response.
  3. Read the downloaded packet from beginning to end and check page breaks, answer space, and type size.

Classroom example: three-pass reading

On the first pass, students mark people, places, or key terms. On the second, they sequence three events or ideas. On the third, they redraw one section and add a two-sentence caption. A substitute can follow the same page sequence without inventing new directions.

Teacher tips

  • Do not paste a copyrighted full book or an unauthorized long text.
  • Provide vocabulary or sentence support only where it helps students work independently.
  • Give open questions enough writing space and a clear success criterion.
